A “buzzing” classroom

I love how a good piece of fiction can generate such a reaction that my students begin talking about the story before they’re even fully through the doors to my classroom. Shirley Jackson’s "The Lottery" has done just that, and I am enjoying the enthusiastic buzz as my students talk in small groups about how the author has built suspense in her dystopic tale.
