Summer approaches

There is a restless energy in my students. They are eager for a break from the routine of school and for the freedom of unstructured summer days. I remember as a kid spending much of my summers reading. Not the summer homework, but books I selected to read for fun. Yet it seems that reading for pleasure is on the decline among my students. The demands of homework and busy schedules interfere during the school year, and social media creeps in to fill the time gaps that do exist. If I have one wish for my students this summer it is this: go to your local library and choose a book that looks interesting, then go find a sunny or sandy or serene spot and read. Curl up and tune out and just read. Enjoy the story. Savor the words. Be transported.
